SSM St. Joseph Hospital West offers a wide range of oncology services, from outpatient procedures to dedicated inpatient services for oncology patients. The hospital provides the latest testing and treatment technology, including prostrate brachytherapy and bilateral breast MRI exams. Patients needing a breast biopsy have access to several different options: MRI-guided biopsy, stereotactic (mammographically-guided) biopsy and ultrasound-guided biopsy. When a patient is diagnosed with breast cancer, SSM St. Joseph Hospital West has a breast health specialist who will guide the patient through the entire treatment process.
With the opening of SSM Cancer Care at St. Joseph Hospital West in October, the Lake Saint Louis campus now provides an even more comprehensive range of integrated oncology services.
In a unique collaboration, SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, Missouri Cancer Care (a private oncology practice), and Saint Louis University Hospital are working together to provide patients with the best possible care in one integrated facility. With the combination of services that these entities provide, patients are able to visit their doctor, have diagnostic tests, receive treatments, and visit support groups in one location.
SSM St. Joseph Hospital West operates a Women’s Imaging and Breast Center, offering digital mammography, bone density scans and massage therapy, among other services. The hospital also operates a cancer resource center and a community education room, which is to be used for support groups, health classes and other community functions. Missouri Cancer Care physicians provide chemotherapy and radiation therapy services, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), respiratory gating, high dose radiation (HDR) and Mammosite. Saint Louis University Hospital physicians provide the CyberKnife ® Stereotactic Radiosurgery System and Neuro-Oncology services.
The $4.2 million dollar CyberKnife ® is one of the most sophisticated forms of non-invasive radiosurgery available. This image-guided technology is used to treat tumors anywhere in the body with extreme, pinpointed accuracy, making it possible for doctors to treat previously inoperative forms of cancer. Currently, this sophisticated treatment is offered at fewer than 100 sites nationwide. The only other CyberKnife ® in the area is located at Saint Louis University Hospital.
In addition, the lakeside cancer center has been designed as a “healing environment,” to take full advantage of the solace that nature has to offer. The state-of-the-art facility features a wall of windows overlooking Lake Saint Louis, and a Serenity Garden and Healing Garden will soon be built into the outside landscape, offering patients peaceful retreats.
Area residents have a special opportunity to leave a permanent legacy in the Healing Garden. Donors to the SSM St. Joseph Foundation can purchase a paver brick to be placed in the garden, with either their name or the name of someone they would like to honor engraved on the brick.
